The market

Every week the local villages have a market - always interesting stalls with the usual fruit and veg and the guy cooking full chickens from his mobile kitchen (very nice btw)

Once a year though there is a market that visits the villages for one night only - such is the bussle around this market that it is held usualy at night, special wooden market stands are built and the fiesta atmosphere is created with mobile floats, a dance stage, flamenco and all the bars are open with roads closed....tables and chairs are in the street and the atmosphere is fantastic.

Last week was Orce's turn and as usual the place was heaving with people and traders - in the streets and main square. The atmosphere realy kicks off around 11.00pm with dancing and music booming from the town halls sound system.

Stalls include artisan products such as cheeses, honey and cured meats. Traditional candy is also sold along with ceramics, esparto, wood, leather, ornaments, olives etc etc. You can also see displays of classic cars and the odd livestock breeder too. A good visit for sure in any village.

...and of course the village needs to stock up for the event - the all important beer wagon...

That does sound fun. In a completely different mood: have you ever read Neil Gaiman's 'Neverwhere'? The Floating Market is something else! But then, so is the book, especially if you know London. I first came to it on video, in a serial produced by Lenny Henry. Very wierd, very atmospheric, very good. The book's just as good. One for the Christmas list?
