Spiders in Andalucia

If you go down to the woods today..... to collect some wood for the BBQ that is you may bring back an extra passenger. This guy hitched a lift back to the cave and decided to show his dis-pleasure when I began to saw in half the log he had long decided was his.

Since leaving the specialist pet trade in the UK some years ago (where we used to sell Tarantulas) this is the biggest spider I have seen out of a vivarium and in natural conditions.

The log in the photo is 15 cm in diameter...

Simon: its the 3 foot long vipers and the scorpions you need to be carefull with...

Be afraid, be very...

Some may bite but nothing is fatal(usualy) do watch out for the scorpions though - they are a tad painfull, with kids its a hospital visit for certain or anyone who may have an allergic reaction. Apart from that cave life is great!!:)

Simon: Good choice, can vouch for that business without doubt, enjoy the "honesty bar" and have a good stay. Great place to enjoy a bit od Spain.

I may have to rethink about my move to Spain!!
If I saw anything like that I would need a clean pair of pants!! Hope to see you at the end of June when I'm back out - (with Simon and Amanda who posted above!!)

ERM......just a thought ...... what happened to the fella??? If I was Mrs CR I wouldn't be happy if it was in a 50km radius of my cave!!!

Did you take him into the campo and drop him off somewhere? Or did you cook him on the barbecue - have heard it tastes like chicken!!!

Mum says if it is still in your garden she is never coming to visit you again.

Cream: he was on the big side and looked a bit menacing, I think my arm went back in time getting out the way when I saw him charging up the length of wood!

Anon: Dont worry about the wildlife, just remember if you hit a wild boar late at night take it to the local carniceria get the best cuts and sell the rest for a premium. Spiders.. nada!

Kate: The big feller is in the garden for certain so beware next time you visit (might even be bigger by then - I am feeding him on chorizo:) Sally can say hello next time she's over - with all those eyes watching...

Big indeed. But after spending some time in Oregon, USA, having black widow nests on the balcony, a brown recluse spider on one of the flower vases, and hobo spiders appearing once in a while... the big ones don't seem so bad.
Here we don't have that problem though, only the occasional scorpion up in the farm.

Mac - I don't believe it, it is almost like you have cursed us somehow - I was watering the plants this morning and a baby one of these popped out!!!! Well when I say baby it was huge, however compared to the one in your photo it was a baby.......unless it was a male? who are a lot smaller than a female and the female is somewhere in my garden too!!! ARRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHH

Sorry Simon if you are reading this, maybe not a good idea to tell Amanda!

Please tell me it is not tarantula season!
